I've been working in tech in SJ since '99. It was always fun when I'd show up at pre-Burn work meetings with dyed hair or a mohawk.

Burning Man was once the pinnacle of my year but is now something I'm leaving behind, possibly for good. Didn't go last year and no plans for this one. Aside from personal ghosts haunting the Playa, it's a lot harder for me to willingly tear down all of my foundations every year. I've been spending so much time trying to build stability in my life that I'm no longer that interested in challenging them on such a profound and societal level.

Economically, I've been more inclined to invest my money in a real vacation or serious travel (eg last year I went to Japan instead of Burning Man). And now that Paul is being tried for arson, the whole thing seems, for me, to have completely jumped the burning shark (note: if I return, my art project will be The Man dressed in a leather jacket ski-jumping over a playa shark).

I still love it and highly recommend the experience to anyone who hasn't been but for me it's no longer providing the experiences I need at this stage in my life. Ultimately, my reasons are probably more personal than anything intrinsic to the state of Burning Man and I may return if it's still happening once I've built a solid foundation.
